AIR in Tainan Program
As the oldest city in Taiwan, Tainan is unique because of its profound historical context, traditional folk beliefs, the regeneration of old buildings, and the variety of art spaces. Tainan City Government has launched open calls for its Artist-In-Residence (AIR) program to select international and domestic artists to be placed in Tainan. For many artists, taking a residency is one method of exploring their art practice, while simultaneously discovering a different culture. Currently, there are two sites managed by the Tainan City Government, namely Soulang Cultural Park and Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center.
Soulang Cultural Park and Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center are both managed by Tainan City Government, and the program provisions are identical, although their historical and cultural contexts and gallery spaces are quite different. For further information, applicants and other interested parties are invited to download the files from Document Download on the front page of website: ‘Soulang Cultural Park: Space and Environment’ and ‘Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center: Space and Environment’.

Yes, applications are certainly welcomed by duos or teams. In the name column, you
should enter either an artist’s name as the representative, or enter the team name.
In addition, please state clearly in the residency plan that you are a duo/team, and
in the records and awards column you must introduce details of what you have done in
previous programs as a duo/team. If this is your first time to apply as a duo/team,
please also state this in the residency plan, and introduce separately details of
each members’ records or awards.
*Please note that if you apply as a duo/team and are selected, your subsidy for
living expenses is for a team, rather than for each single artist. For example, if
two artists apply as a duo and are selected, the living expenses will be NT$30,000,
which means the subsidy of NT$30,000 is for two artists, rather than for each single
artist. In addition, the accommodation is provided for resident artists ONLY. To
maintain the safety, living quality and rights of every single resident artist, the
accommodation is not available for artists’ family members, partners or assistants
to stay overnight. Pets are also forbidden from the premises. If you are a couple
and are both artists, please apply as a duo/team.
We welcome applicants who are interested in Interdisciplinary, Visual Arts and Performance. Artists working in the field of Photography may only apply for a place at Soulang Cultural Park.
Each artist is required to choose their preferred residency period during the submission process on the application website. When the final results have been announced, Soulang and Tsung-Yeh will confirm the exact residency period with the selected artists.
The program is open to all adult artists (aged 20 years and above). Please ensure you can fulfill the residency requirements.
Subsidy
Unfortunately, there are no airfare subsidies. Artists are required to cover this cost.
According to the residency program, if an applicant requires an assistant (i.e., someone who is not an applicant), it is the applicant’s responsibility to notify the Soulangh Artist Village in the application form, and all eligible expenses for such assistants will be included in the subsidy. No additional expenses will be provided for assistants after submission of the application.
On average, the living cost per person in Tainan is approximately NT$15,000 to 20,000 per month.
The project fee refers to the full cost of the exhibition/performance the selected
artists will be required to complete during the residency. It covers the subsidy for
the Presentation expenses. The maximum allocation is NT$150,000 (including tax) per
artist/duo/team, and will be paid directly to the relevant contractors.
The above expenses include: providing a service or materials used in completing
workshops, exhibitions and performances, materials fees, brochure design and
printing, dissemination, translation fees and expenses for a press conference. Any
transportation fees for works are excluded.
Exam and result
Applicants will be assessed directly by the jury committee through the uploaded application data.
The results will be announced on the Soulang Cultural Park and Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center official website, and will be emailed to the successful candidates by October 2023.
Artist accommodation
Accommodation is only for resident artists. To maintain the safety, living quality and rights of every single artist, the accommodation is NOT available for non-artists to stay overnight (including family members, assistants, partners or pets).
